Crochet Pattern: The Mesmer Jester Hat
Please note this listing is for a digital crochet PDF PATTERN which will be immediately downloadable, not a finished item!
❉ What you get:
Create a whimsical two-colour Mesmer Jester Hat for yourself with this 23 Page pattern! This pattern includes a mixture of written instructions and photos and is appropriate for intermediate level crafters or confident advanced beginners with experience of two-colour spirals.
The Mesmer Jester Hat features trippy and mesmerizing two-colour stripes from its spiral construction! Finish with either a straight or pointed front, and matching or contrast colour hat band. Add optional pom-poms (or whatever else you can imagine?!) to the ends of the hat points.
The Mesmer Jester Hat is stuffing-free! It's structure comes from your clever stitching and appropriate yarn choice. Add wire to the hat points to shape them how you like- into spirals, zig-zags, or whatever else you like!
Choose any of your two favourite colours for endless creepy, clownish or whimsical harlequin themes!
❉ Supplies Needed:
Yarn:
I used Hayfield Bonus Aran with Wool. I find this is a great thick aran weight yarn, and the 20% wool content adds good stiffness and texture, perfect for this type of project. Yarn choice is very important for this project. See ‘A note on Yarn Choice' in the pattern for more information on yarn substitutions.
Colour A: 80g aran or heavier worsted weight yarn. Equivalent to approx. 168m/184yds. (Black on my work.)
Colour B: 80g aran or heavier worsted weight yarn. Equivalent to approx. 168m/184yds. (White on my work.)
For the Hat Band: Colour C: 25g aran or heavier worsted weight yarn. Equivalent to approx. 53m/58yds.
This is the total approx. amount needed for the Hat Band. You may pick a different third colour or you may choose to use either or both COLOUR A and COLOUR B for these sections, in which case this amount is in addition to that already stated for those colours. If you choose to make pom-poms, you will need additional yarn, too.
Recommended hooks - 5mm and 4.5mm (the 4.5mm hook can be forgone if you absolutely cannot get your hands on one- see relevant parts of pattern)
Notions- Yarn needle, scissors, several locking stitch markers.
Optional but highly recommended: approx. 30cm/12in 1.5mm (16 gauge) crafters or florist wire
Optional: pom-pom maker
A flexible measuring tape may be helpful
❉ Experience Level:
This pattern was written with intermediate crafters in mind. However, I believe that an adventurous beginner who has experience crocheting two-colour spirals would fair well with it!
I do not, however, explain how to work the basic crochet stitches used. You will need to know basic crochet stitches (including increase/decrease), how to work continuous rounds, work with a magic ring, work a crochet spiral, be comfortable working with yarn held double and know how to read written crochet term abbreviations using a key.
Please read my FAQ for more information on the experience level required for my patterns.
❉ Sizing:
This pattern is for adult sized heads and is designed to fit a 21-24in circumference head. The Mesmer Jester Hat is adjustable, meaning that the back is partially open with a laced back, which can be laced tighter or looser for an appropriate fit (see listing photo of the back of hat). This adjustable back allows the Mesmer Jester Hat to accommodate not only different peoples’ differently sized heads- but also one person’s own different hairstyles and/or wigs!
❉ Pattern Notes:
This pattern uses US crochet terms and is written in the English language.
